Frequently Asked Questions
What type of flue do I need for my current chimney?
Usually, the type of flue lining needed for your chimney is identified by us conducting a site survey and inspection on your chimney, sometimes we can hazard a guess as to what flue you already have in your chimney by the age. Chimneys built before the 1990’s are usually just brick built without a proper flue, homes with chimneys built after the 1990’s may have either a class 1 or 2 chimneys. Depending on which chimney you have, you will need to have a specific type of flue installed.
Do I need to have my existing chimney lined or inspected?
A new flue liner will depend on the condition of your London chimney. This is a hard question to answer without knowing the full details of your chimney, it is unwise to simply assume that a certain type of chimney from a period will need a certain type of flue lining, as each chimney is vastly different! We would perform an on-site survey in order to properly give you an idea of what type of flue liner you would need, if we discovered issues with your chimney during our survey we would advise you on the best possible route to fix the issue before installing your new flue.
What size of chimney and flue liner do I need to burn solid fuel like wood?
Burning coal or wood in a stove fire requires a chimney or flue with a minimum internal diameter of 200mm (8 inches), the chimney or flue would need to be constructed with the correct materials in order to withstand the high temperatures of combustion. An on-site survey in your London home would give us a better idea of whether or not you can burn solid fuel with your existing chimney.
Do I need to have a chimney sweep before having my new flue lining installed?
It is advisable to have a chimney sweep before having a new flue liner. This ensures creosote and soot from previous use is cleaned up and to make sure your chimney has no structural issues that would need fixing before having a new flue installed. Sooty & Sweeps can perform a chimney sweep on the same day as having your flue lining installed!
